Diploma Program

Toronto’s Only Evening Shiatsu Training School

The Shiatsu Academy of Tokyo is the only certified Namikoshi shiatsu training school in Toronto that offers mid-afternoon and evening courses to part-time students. This gives students the freedom to hold a day job while completing a 2-year diploma to become a Shiatsu Practitioner.

The Shiatsu Academy of Tokyo is a Private Career College (PCC) under the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities, Province of Ontario. Our programs, courses, student tuition, fees, and the professional qualifications of our teachers have all been subject to Ministry scrutiny before the school could open its doors with Ministry Certification.

The Shiatsu Practitioner diploma program is a 2-year commitment that covers 2,200 hours.

Shiatsu Practitioner Diploma

The Shiatsu Academy of Tokyo is currently offering a 2200 hour program which leads to the Shiatsu Practitioner Diploma.  This program combines an in-depth study and practice of shiatsu with the necessary science courses of anatomy, physiology, and pathology and with auxiliary courses in nutrition, self-care, massage and natural therapies, professional ethics, business, and communications.

The 600 hour plus science part of the program gives students information on the workings of the body, necessary for a well-trained Shiatsu Therapist.  This type of scientific background is then paired with nearly 900 hours in the study and practice of shiatsu involving close to 500 hours in student clinics to master the art of giving excellent chair, table, and floor shiatsu.

Our graduates have good hands, a keen understanding of the human body, and an awareness of what is necessary to achieve and maintain excellent health.  Our graduates are also prepared to survive in the business world as therapists and understand their professional responsibilities with thorough training in professional ethics.  Perhaps our most attractive features of our school is that it is the only certified Toronto school which offers a part-time evening program so that students can keep their day jobs and study at the same time.  It is all part of the informal family atmosphere the school tries to create between its staff and students.

Schedule and Fees

The Shiatsu Academy of Tokyo will be offering the Shiatsu Practitioner Diploma on a January – December schedule.

The cost of the diploma program is $10,800 if paid in full. We can also work out installment plans.

Introduction to Shiatsu Course

Course schedule: November 2 – December 7, Wednesdays from 5:00-6:30 p.m.
Cost: $120 and includes the book Shiatsu Doh
Instructor: Ross Oakes, Principal

Becoming a Shiatsu Practitioner is a great way for people who have finished the first phase of their employment career or stuck in a dead end job to start again.  Massage is an alternative medicine that can relieve the sufferings of many problems and shiatsu is one branch of massage that is especially effective.  When, a student enrols in the Shiatsu Practitioner Program, the first kind of shiatsu that is learned is basic or self-shiatsu, which is practiced by students on themselves.  The Shiatsu Academy of Tokyo especially wants to get its students to reach a proficiency level quickly so that they will not only be able to practice on themselves, but also on real clients in our student clinics where they will not only increase their skill level but get an opportunity to earn some income for themselves.

To that end, when students sign for the Shiatsu Practitioner Program, they start in the brief 6 week Introduction Course which consists of two 90 minute sessions in which in which an overview of Namikoshi shiatsu, and the history of the Shiatsu Academy of Tokyo and its founder, Kensen is presented. The student will be given a copy of the 2012 schedule and will be allowed to select and attend any two non-advanced courses currently being taught to get a picture of what shiatsu is about. This also gives a new student a chance to meet teachers and fellow students. The student is also entitled to get complimentary chair, table, and floor shiatsu treatments at our student clinics to get a feeling and enthusiasm about the shiatsu they will learn and to experience first-hand the type of relief they will be able to give to clients.  Cost of the course is only $120.

The formal program begins in January, but that is no problem for any student who wants to revive their career by starting at any time during the year because, once the Introductory Course is completed, students are allowed to enrol in any non-advanced course or module that has not started yet, and upon successful conclusion, have that course count towards their Shiatsu Practitioner Diploma.  So if you find yourself in a rut career-wise, why not consider shiatsu as a second career?  It’s a healthy career choice to a healthy life.
